Disturbing Mass Suicide Worries Local Authorities

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – A spokesperson for the LADP revealed details of an apparent mass suicide that occurred in the early hours of the morning today in a small warehouse along the docks in LA Harbor.

“We have no information at this time about the identities of the deceased, ” a grim-looking Detective Rob Richardson said during a press conference, “all we know is the scene is horrific and we don’t know why all of these people decided to end their lives.”

Sources tell Reuters that the scene is indeed grisly; the participants apparently inflicted severe injuries on themselves in the process of ending their lives.

According to Detective Richardson, there are at least three hundred bodies in the warehouse.

Work continues on Fury, we’re very close to releasing our first “alpha” release.   Currently, the game is “playable”, and “winnable”, but it’s not very fun yet.  The nuggets of funness are there though, and I think within a week or so there will be enough to have some folks check it out.

We have set up a project on Pivotal Tracker to track our progress.  If you haven’t heard it it, Pivotal Tracker is a great site for small, agile teams.  The public view of the Fury project is available here:

Also, my friend Nik has joined up to help. Nik and I have been working on games for many years now, and I’m excited about having his help to finish this off.

We have some pretty cool stuff in mind (well, *I* think it’s cool). We aim to be the first rogue-like with Facebook integration.  Here are some ideas of what that might mean:

  • Friends Leaderboards
  • Challenge games (you and a friends start a game with the same random seed and see who can get the highest points/survive the longest)
  • Rescue games.  Let’s say you die in a game.  As with most roguelikes, death in Fury is permanent, unless you can get a friend to rescue you.  If you die, you’ll be able to generate a rescue request, and a friend that takes the challenge will have to descend into your dungeon and make it to your corpse, which will then let you proceed from that point.

As Fury is written in java, I’m currently looking at running this as an applet, which does have some issues. We’ll see how it goes through the alpha testing.
